preamble:
the united nations volunteers(unv) programme is the un organization that promotes volunteerism to supportpeace and development worldwide. volunteerism can transform the pace and natureof development and it benefits both society at large and the individualvolunteer. unv contributes to peace and development by advocating forvolunteerism globally, encouraging partners to integrate volunteerism intodevelopment programming, and mobilizing volunteers.
in most cultures volunteerism is deeply embedded inlong-established, ancient traditions of sharing and support within thecommunities. in this context, un volunteers take part in various forms ofvolunteerism and play a role in development and peace together with co-workers,host agencies and local communities.
in all assignments, un volunteers promote volunteerismthrough their action and conduct. engaging in volunteer activity caneffectively and positively enrich their understanding of local and socialrealities, as well as create a bridge between themselves and the people intheir host community. this will make the time they spend as un volunteers evenmore rewarding and productive.

7. brief programme description:
un women china intendsto carry forward vawg prevention efforts by working with teenage students,primarily boys and young men, in a middle/high school in china, in line withglobal campaign and advocacy efforts, particularly the heforshe campaign.
based on the knowledgelearned from the regional p4p phase i study, particularly the research findingsfrom china, un women china plans to design and implement a pilot programme toengage the chinese youth, particularly boys and young menby developing a ‘model practice’ to promote school based intervention to endviolence against women and girls (evawg), targeting male adolescents aged 13-18years. in doing so, the intervention aims to challenge traditional and culturalnorms and behaviors on gender discrimination and vawg among students at thebrs. if successful, the model intervention will be replicated in a broaderlocal context to engage boys and young men in in china.
youtharound the world have a strong interest in social media and are their frequentusers. china is no exception. as one of the four outputs designed for the brs programme,social media campaigns shall be conducted to widely engageboys and young men within and outside of brs in promoting the elimination ofviolence against women and girls (evawg) efforts. the brs peer educators andother active students will receive training from an experienced social mediapractitioner in how to use social media effectively to support social causes.the training will focus on how to develop students’ own social mediaactivities or campaigns to reach chinese youth and engage them in questioningmasculinity stereotypes and taking small actions to evawg.
thepurpose of this proposed initiative, to be funded from the danish innovationfunds managed by the un women regional office for asia and the pacific, is tostrengthen social media activities within the brs programme and to monitorstudents’ social media campaigns using appropriate m&e survey tools inorder to better assess the impacts of the students’ social media activities.
the post requires a person who can support inparticular the social media component ofthe brs programme, and who can also support the overall programme advocacy inall programme areas.

injuly 2010, the united nations general assembly created the united nationsentity for gender equality and the empowerment of women (un women).
workingin china since 1998, un women provides technical and financial assistance toinnovative programmes and strategies for gender equality and women'sempowerment.un women works in partnership with governments, non-governmentalorganisations (ngos), un agencies, donors, communities and networks to advancegender equality.
placingthe advancement of women's human rights at the centre of our work, un womenchina focuses on:
· violence against women this fundamental violation of women’s rights remains widespread.women need strong laws, backed by implementation and services for protectionand prevention.
· leadership andpolitical participation whether inpolitical bodies or corporate boardrooms, women have a limited say in thedecisions that affect them. measures are needed to open more space for women’sparticipation and help women realize their full leadership potential.
· economicempowerment women lag farbehind men in access to land, credit and decent jobs, even though a growingbody of research shows that enhancing women’s economic options boosts nationaleconomies.

unwomen china's programmes are guided by:
· theconvention on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women(cedaw), 1979
· thebeijing platform for action (bpfa), 1995
· themillennium declaration and development goals (mdgs), 2005
· the parisdeclaration, 2005
chinaratified cedaw in 1980 and is legally obliged to take allappropriate measures to eliminate discrimination against women and advancegender equality. un women assists china to meet its obligations to implementcedaw by strengthening the capacity of national partners. the spirit of cedaw and bpfa has been affirmed by themillennium declaration and the mdgs.
unwomen china is the secretariat for the united nations theme group ongender (untgg). the objective of the untgg is to serve as a forum anda channel for experience sharing in an effort to develop effective gendermainstreaming strategies and advocacy in the work of the un system and thewider donor community.
unwomen china also administrates the china gender facility (cgf) established in 2004 by the untgg. the objective of the cgf is to contribute togender equality and women’s empowerment in china through grants ofapproximately $50,000 to government, civil society, and academic institutionsin china.
10. description of duties:
under the direct supervision of the countryprogramme manager and the evaw programme coordinator and working closely with theselected international expert and the implementing partner, the postholder willwork on the following:
1) supporting the peer-education and socialmedia components of the brs programme (approximately 65% of time).
itis expected that the brs peer educators have skills and knowledge to use peereducation methods to effectively engage their peers in preventing theperpetration of vawg among boys and men.therefore,the postholder will support the implementation of the beijing royalschool (brs) programme to preventviolence against women and girls (vawg), in particular focusing on thestrengthening of the social media and peer education components of the programme.the social media component of the programme aims to the establishment of asocial media campaign widely engaging boys and young men within and outside brsin evawg efforts. the peer education component of the programme aims to enhancing the skills and the knowledge of brs studentsto use methods of peer education to effectively engage their peers inpreventing the perpetration of vawg among boys and men.
the postholder will, in consultation with un women, theinternational expert and the implementing partner, contribute to the programplanning and implementation with the objective to ensure achievement of programmeoutputs. the postholder will take corrective action when necessary to meet programmeobjectives.
morespecificly, the postholder will contribute to the following activities:
a. assist in holding social media trainingworkshop for 30 brs peer educators.
b. facilitate brsstudents creative development of social media activities to raise awareness onissue to wider population of chinese teenagers after social media training.
c. assist in conductingbaseline survey to understand students’ knowledge, attitude and behavior ongender equality and vawg.
d. assist in developinggender equality and evawg handbook for chinese youth, targeting boys to changeattitudes and behavior.
e. support implementing partnerto conduct training of 40 peer educators in brs.
f. mentor the trained studentsand support their efforts to promote gender equality and healthy masculinities.
g. assist trained students andtheir peers to organize evaw day campaign on campus each year.
h. support the monitoring and assessment of thesocial media component of the brs programme.
i. support the monitoring and assessment of thepeer education component of the brs programme
j. performother tasks related to vawg initiatives in china, assignedby the programme coordiantor.
2) knowledge management (approximately 15% oftime).
the postholderwill assist the selected brs programme implementing partner in developing atraining manual and training materials on understanding masculinity and involvingyouth in preventing vawg under the brs programme.
3) documentation and reporting (approximately 15%of time).
the postholderwill, both for the brs programme and for the p4p phase ii programme in china:
a. assist in the preparation of annual reportsand quarterly programme monitoring reports;
b. help to maintain and establish programmeand programme databases as needed;
c. contribute to identifying andsupporting documentation of relevant best practices.
4) furthermore, un volunteer is encouraged to(approximately 5% of time):
· strengthening their knowledge andunderstanding of the concept of volunteerism by reading relevant unv andexternal publications and taking active part in unv activities (for instance inevents that mark ivd);
· getting acquainted with and building ontraditional and/or local forms of volunteerism in the host country;
· reflecting on the type and quality ofvoluntary action that they are undertaking, including participation in ongoingreflection activities;
· contributing articles/write-ups on fieldexperiences and submitting them for unv publications/websites, newsletters,press releases, etc;
· assisting with the unv buddy programme fornewly-arrived un volunteers.
11. results/expected output:
· all activities implemented and monitored withgood quality and due dilligence;
· key social media component’s activitiesachieved;
· peer education advocacy activities completed;
· inputs required for annual reports and otherreports devised and of high quality;
· best practices on peer education documented
· a final statement of achievements towardsvolunteerism for development during the assignment, such as reporting on thenumber of brs students mobilized, activities participated in and capacitiesdeveloped.
12. qualifications/requirements:
· bachelor degree at least in: education, youthwork, communication and social media, international development or a relatedsocial science field;
· at least 2 years of related programmeexperience in volunteerism and/or outreach and capacity development;
· current knowledge, understanding and interestin education and gender issues and policies in china;
· previous involvement with a youthorganization;
· work experience in communication –preferentially in the field of social media targeting male youth;
· must be a chinese national (includes hongkong and macao permanent residents);
· fluency in spoken and written mandarin andenglish;
· candidates at the age of 25 – 30 are stronglyencouraged to apply and minimum age is 22 years old.

14. living conditions:
beijing is a modern city with relativelyhigh-quality public infrastructure and services. it is the foremost politicaland cultural metropolis in china. the city has excellent health servicesavailable.
15. conditions of service
national un volunteers receive a standard volunteerliving allowance (vla), which is intended to cover their accommodation andbasic living expenses. in china the vla is 3,900 rmb per month. national unvolunteers are entitled to an excellent health, life and disability insurancepackage. a modest settling-in grant and end-of-assignment allowance will alsobe provided, along with travel to and from the duty station. un volunteers areentitled to 2.5 days personal leave per month and official un holidays.
