background information

in july 2010, the united nationsgeneral assembly established un women, the united nations entity for gender equality and the empowerment of women, to accelerate progress in promoting gender equality, expanding opportunity and tackling discrimination worldwide.

un women is a strong and dynamicun champion of women’s rights, providing a powerful voice for women and girlsat the global, regional and local levels. the formation of un women also strengthens the un’s ability to provide coherent and timely support to member states to advance gender equality, in line with national priorities and international norms and policies. it also strengthens effective partnerships with civil society.


the key functions of un women areas follows:

· support inter-governmental bodies, such as the commission on the status of women, in their formulation of policies, global standards, norms,and, monitor and report on system-wide compliance with inter-governmental mandates on gender balance;

· help member states to implement these standards, standing ready toprovide suitable technical and financial support to those countries that request it and to forge effective partnerships with civil society;

· support national efforts to promote and enhance gender equality and women’s empowerment through innovative and catalytic country driven programming working with un country teams (uncts), in line with nationalpriorities;

· undertake new, and consolidate existing research and analytical work to support overall objectives and act as the hub/centre of knowledge and experience on gender equality and women’s empowerment from all parts of the un system;

· lead and coordinate un system strategies, policies and actions on gender equality and women’sempowerment to promote effective system wide gender main streaming;

· strengthen the accountability of the un system, including through oversight, monitoring and reporting on system wide performance on gender equality.

un women china office uses twointernational agreements - the convention on the elimination of all forms of discrimination against women (cedaw) and the beijing platform for action from the fourth world conference on women in 1995 - to guide its programmes and work. un women china office provides financial and technical assistance to innovative programmes and strategies to foster women’s empowerment and gender equality.

purpose

past experience proves that asignificant amount of translation and interpretation services are needed to facilitateun women’s programmes, projects, and office work, especially with proposalscreenings, meetings, capacity building workshops, and advocacy events.therefore it is crucial to hire four professional chinese-english interpretersto provide the un women china office with simultaneous and consecutiveinterpretation for events, such as workshops and meetings, and writtentranslation of documents. the four interpreters would work as teams oftwo pairs inproviding simultaneous interpretation at events but could work separately forother types of assignments (consecutive interpretation and writtentranslation).

the interpreters are expected to provide high quality chinese to english and english to chinese translation and interpretation services to the un women china office on a per assignment basis. the contract will be for one year inlength, but individual assignments will vary from a half day to a week or more.assignments can include translation of documents, simultaneous interpretationat events, consecutive interpretation at events, or any combination of theseduties. travel may be required for some assignments. the un women china office will identify in advance translation/interpretation assignments,ascertain whether the hired interpreters are available during the time period of the assignment, and clearly inform the hired interpreters of the nature,timeframe, and expected outputs for each assignment. after completion of the assignment, the interpreters will be required to submit an invoice detailing time spent on task and/or number of characters/words translated.

remuneration

the remuneration will be paidupon submission of the invoice and successful completion of the assignmentapproved by the country programme manager.

qualifications

· bachelor’s degree in english, interpretation/translation or other related field

· at least 5 years of experience in simultaneous interpretation

· familiarity with the issues of gender equality and women’sempowerment in china, especially with english and chinese gender terminology

· familiarity with the un system and its terminology in english and chinese

· availability of translated publications or products as examples of work

· excellent communication and interpersonal skills

· strong work ethic and professional reliability

· ability to meet deadlines on time

· punctuality in attending events
